DNS vs. WINS 1

Which of the 2 creates more garbage to be sent around a network? Or are they fairly even?

They are the same. WINS is for any pre 2K machine, DNS is W2k and after.

DNS works all over the world with all kinds of Computers, WINS works in a LAN with Windows.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Comes with it that depending on what kind of WINS node your clients are, WINS can create a lot of broadcast traffic.

In the basis they do the same that is converting IP adresses to hostnames, but WINS is a flat database using NetBIOS names (16 characters) and DNS is using a hiarchical structured database (like PC1.education.Microsoft.COM). This same station (PC1) can have different names like:

FQDN = PC1.education.microsoft.com
station name = PC1
Netbios name = PC1

FQDN = Fully Qualified Domain Name

Prefere to use DNS, but in a enviromend with Win98, Me, 95 you will also need WINS.
