dns srv not registered in dns

Hello. I'm connecting thru vpn from my xp pro sp2 pc at home to my 2003 server and am having difficulty getting on the domain. I can connect to the VPN ok using the user/pass I created in AD, as long as I don't specify a domain. When trying to join the domain thru System properties->Computer Name I keep getting a msg saying "domain could not be found." I check the details and it says "dns srv not registered in dns" amongst other things. What am I missing here?

I am not using the Routing & Remote Access snap-in, but instead created a new connection on the server to allow incoming connections. If you need more info to assist, please let me know! Thanks!

NM, I figured it out. I set the dns settings at home and was able to log into the domain and see all the shared info now. I'm a noob!
