ok - firstly i'm not very good on ms

test server - upgraded nt pdc to 2003 - let it install the dns when it set it up - called it dental.local

installed another clean member server 2003 - let ran the AD install and installed the dns on this same dental.local

move the five roles to clean one and added global cat and remove other

when i try to remove the first server i get a dsa operation unable to due to dns lookup prob
nslookup produces a server unknown

i think this is a roots hints prob - servers are isolated

i was fine on my first test but no this one
ms dns is confusing to us netware guys

whats easiest fix or help
cheers]

it is a test but need to do it real soon
maybe best to read some bumpf on it though
is the 2000 server dns book ok or is 2003 totally dif

If you already have the 2000 server book, start reading and look for the 2003 book. There are some very big changes in how 2000 and 2003 work, but very few of them for the most part.

Does the second server point to itself for DNS? If not you'll get problems. Also have you made sure you don't have a "." zone (if you do delete it).

Run DCDIAG against both servers and see what it picks up.

swearing at it and rebooting a few times with a flush and rreg fixed it

this was just a test for a site we have that is ms

tried it twice with no probs at all
this was just my third go to verify all ok

next time for real
also i think with it being isolated on a vlan - the artificial environment is sometimes more awkward

cheers
