DNS setup debug 1

i have a win 2003 machine running as a DNS server, it also has the AD and Exchange on it (i know a big boo boo)

i have another 2003 machine acting as a webserver

my computer (win xp) uses the DNS server as my primary dns server

when i do an nslookup from my server it cant find the 2003 machine and uses my ISP's DNS server for resolving???

***cant find server name for address 192.168.168.13: non-existent domain
default server: ns9.embarqservices.net
address: 138.210.81.3

what could cause my computer to not see the internal server? were on the same subnet, both my computer and the server are on the same switch????

the AD/exchange are for DOMAIN, the web server hosts the site for DOMAIN, when i do an nslookup from my computer for the domain, it goes through the external dns and finds the external ip.......from the DNS server when i do an nslookup for the domain it only finds itself, not the web server, when i do an nslookup for the ip of the webserver from the DNS server it says

***cant find server name for address 192.168.168.12: non-existent domain

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Start by creating a ReverseLookup Zone and populating it with PTR records for your servers. That will make the nslookup results make a little more sense.

Then try using the command:

server [ip address of the internal DNS server]
before doing your query of the web server's name.

In DNS Admin, get properties on your servername and make sure that the DNS service is listening on the proper interface, if you have more than one interface on that server.
