I have five nt servers and I am going to upgrade my network to win2000. All the servers have static IP addresses and are not a part of dhcp scope. Do I need to create the srv records for them manually in the dns and if yes, then please help me on how to do that. Thanks in advance.

First, what kind of DNS infrastructure you have. NT 4 or 2000? I f you are keeping the same server name and IP on your servers, and just upgrading, you DNS server should be all set and you shouldnt have to change anything. I f you dont have host records in the DNS , then you have to add them manually in NT 4.0. Quick question, what roles do these 5 servers that you are upgrading play?? Shakamon

Out of these five servers, one is pdc and 2 are bdc's and file server. I have a linux server which is currently dns as well. I am want to get rid of that and install dns on the first dc when I do the upgrade to win2000. I will be putting dhcp on the same win2000 dc. So it is going to be a fresh dns implementation on the network. So do I need to create the A records and the service records for my nt bdc's as they are not a part of dhcp scope and I am assuming that in that case I will have to manually edit the srv records too. Could you please let me know how to create the srv records in case I need to. Please bear with me as I am pretty "naive" with this win2000 upgrade.

Thanks

Before you do anything, you are going to have to install a DNS infrastructure, or at least have one in place before you install your PDC. I would go with a Windows 2000 DNS server. When you install AD, it will ask you about DNS as well.

See some of the other threads WIn2k Upgrade AD WINS DNS DHCP, some guy left me a pretty good idea where to begin. First upgrade your meember servers. I went with installing a separate 2k DNS server. It isnt just about setting up A records, you have to set up SOA, NS, etc. as well. Heck DNS is a beast unto itself. Try and narrow your question to one thing at a time and I will try and help. I am going through an upgrade myself....no fun
