I am trying to setup a DNS server and despite the best efforts of stuff I've found on the internet not managing to get it to work.

I'm wondering if something fundamental such as the fact that I'm trying to use a 2003 server as my DNS server when it's only a member server within an NT domain i.e. no active directory setup yet.

Should it be able to work like this ? If the answer is no then I guess I know the answer to my problem !

The answer is actually yes. It should work as a memeber server in your NT4 domain. NT4 machines won't do dynamic updates without help from a DHCP server, so you will have to manually create Host (A) records.

Thanks for that I'm obviously doing something wrong then in that case - least I know now - the majority of my clients are 2k/XP and they aren't showing as DNS entries so I've got it wrong somewhere !

Will go back and attack it until it works.

Check the DNS tab under network properties. Should see a checkbox that states "Register this computers connections in DNS" - something like that. Also, make sure the ip address and domain name are entered in the DNS tab. Re-boot workstation, see what happens.

Gareth, what exactly isn't working at this point? Is it the dynamic DNS registration, or is it actual external name resolution for internal clients?

If you run DHCP and DNS from the same server, you could have DDNS working.
