DNS Resolution

Hi,

I appear to be having some DNS resolution issues with W2K AS. I've tried everything I can think of and as of yet can't work out what is going on. Basically I use DHCP and DNS on my network, I use DHCP to allocate IP addresses to all my client machines, which works great. I also use DNS for internal resolution to speed things up a bit, the problem is that we run an intranet that our users access on a frequent basis. I have noticed that some of the machines that use DHCP don't appear to always be able to resolve the virtual IIS instance name. By running ipconfig /renew on the machines DNS resolution suddenly works. What I don't understand is that if the PC's are rebooted everynight and the IP address allocated why doesn't DNS resolution work everytime?

Where is that IIS server? Same LAN? How's DNS configured related to that ResourceRecord(s) (A, CNAME, maybe SRV?)
Did you try to go to that computer that is having the error and try a ping to the IIS name? Or, also an nslookup.
Ceck also IE connection settings.

You may want to ensure that the client machines are set up for Dynamic DNS. How long are your DHCP leases? If you have short leases and no Dynamic DNS, then your DNS database could contain stale records. If your intranet is running asp or java code, it is possible that your IIS server is trying to do a reverse DNS lookup to the client and getting one of these stale record. When you say that the clients can't resolve to the IIS server, have you tried doing an nslookup for the IIS server from the client having the problem, and vice versa (from the server to the client)?
