I have 2 dns servers, one in each of 2 locations in a LAN/WAN network. The systems are all part of a W2K network; all servers are using SP4, there are 2 global catalogs, 3 DCs, and the network IP class is a private range.

On the network, we are using DNS, DHCP, WINS, as well as having an Exch2K server and ISA standard edition.

There are also 5 pieces of Cisco equipment in use: (2)1721 routers & (3)2950 switches.

My problem is that when system try to utilize a pre-defined share , the system states that the netBIOS name doesn't exisit, but if you use the FQDN the share works swell! I also have the problem when uses try to validate their roaming profile, the error message is: server not found.

Anyone have an idea where in the services there might be a mistake? We have no recursion set and are using forwarders.

Inquiring Minds would love to know!!

You need to append dns suffix.

What machines are having the problem. On a pure w2k network, you don't need netbios, so I'm guessing you have some pre w2k clients. True? (Just a little more clarification needed.)

Er, GlenJohnson, you have me there. Yes, out environment uses its only custom application and it is pre-win2k. All systems in the network access this application during the course of a day.

So in our network, will Jsauce's solution resolve the problem GJ ? Will I be needing to use a HOST file ?

Inquiring Minds still would love to know!!

On a system that has w2k and pre w2k machines, I always use a hosts and lmhosts file on the pre w2k machines. This will help with name resolution. Good luck.b

GlenJohnson;

What happens if an administrator adds those two files to the client instead to resolve the problems being experienced instead of the servers.

I myself have a pretty good idea of your answer, but I need the "offical" explanation for the other administrator.

I can take the course material but sometimes have difficulty hashing it back to those that do not fully understand. Go Figure!

Thanks again...
