DNS Problem

Hi,

Can someone help me please.

How do i get a machine that is hosting DNS to access the internet.

All the client machines that go through this DNS Server access the internet with no problems. But when i want the server to access the internet it wont.

Its a windows 2000 server.

Check your gateway. You must have the correct gateway configured on the server for it to be able to access the internet. Also the segement the server resides must have access to the gateway to the internet. find out your gateways IP address and ping it first..

i have tried pinging the router. it just times out every time

Can other machines on the same subnet access the internet?

If it is timing out then you will need to contact your network support group. It appears that maybe the routes are not setup correctly. Maybe the router your server sits behind does not know how to get to the gateway..

here is the deal,

I have a windows 2000 server which is running dns to allow client machines to log in faster. ip 192.168.16.100

I have enabled forwarders to an ADSL router which is my internet gateway. ip 192.168.16.51. There for any address that cannot be resolved will get passed onto the router and then onto the ISP.

The client machines are setup with the default gateway set to 192.168.16.100 and dns 192.168.16.100. These all work perfectly

I assume that i should set the server up the same??

I have tried this and it wont work. If i change the default gateway on the server to 192.168.16.100 non of the client machines work.

There for the server is setup like the following.

IP 192.168.16.100
Gateway 192.168.16.51
DNS 192.168.16.100
