DNS problem

I just setup a dns server. It is going to be used to point websites to my servers. It is setup so that the computer asks the dns for the website if it is not there i would like the dns to then go to the root servers for answers.

The problem is when i type a website in like

http://www.msn.com

I get a page can not be displayed, but if i hit refresh then the website pops up like it is suppose to do. the same thing happens everytime i go to a website.

Is this because i havent moved my domain over to my dns server yet plan to do that later this week. E.g. My domain is

http://www.mydomain.com

the dns server is dns1.mydomain.com. My domain is hosted by anonther company till then.

Are you using forwarding? And on the system that you are trying to reach the website on, is it configured to point at the server you set up for name resolution? After you successfully get to a website, are you able to check the cache on your DNS server and see if it cached the name of the website you went to?

I would open up a command-line and type "nslookup" that will go into nslookup mode and tell you which server it is asking to resolve names. Then I would type some new domain/host names in there and see how the server that is listed there resolves them.

The goal is to figure out where the query is actually going, and nslookup will help you. Checking the cache on the server will help too.
