I finally got my own computer at work and got it
talking to the lone server..server is NT4, my computer
is win2k..no domain stuff, just a simple workgroup..
when i go for internet, i get DNS unavailable notices
back..DNS 2 second timeout, etc..
i run netdiag and can see the default gateway and
the ip of 2 DNS servers which are the whois for our IP..
cant ping those DNS quads..??
any help would be greatly appreciated..

What ip are you getting? DHCP or fixed ip?

the NT 4 server has DHCP..
when i do a netdiag.exe, it gives me the DNS server
quads for our local IP provider and a default gateway
of 90.0.0.100..
when i do a nslookup, it says DNS servers are unavailable,
2 sec timed out..

Post ipconfig /all here for us to take a look at please. Also, can you try throwing in a hosts file and see if that helps?
