i'm trying to install a mail server but i got this requirement dont know what.

info and requirement for on-line mailserver'

'the company has the domain our.company.com and a primary mx record points to the computer where the mailserver program will be installed (name of the computer in the dns is mail.ourcompany.com)'

what does it mean? we have a registered domain name but whats the mx records. does it mean that id have to register also mail.ourcompany.com. how can i set this up properly. we have statics ip provided by the isp

If I wanted to send a mail to you at kinalas@company.com then my mail server needs to know how to get to your mail server so that you will get my e-mail. So, it looks up the MX record for company.com, which points to mail.company.com, which has an A record with it's IP address. My mail server can then connect to your mail server and send the e-mail.

Just ask your ISP or whoever provides your DNS for 'company.com' to set up an MX record for your domain and give them the IP address of the mail server.

Here's an example. If you send an e-mail to tek-tips.com, where does it go? If you look up the MX record you can see ..

Query: tek-tips.com. Query type: MX record
Recursive query: Yes Authoritative answer: Yes
Query time: 511 ms. Server name: n/a

Answer:
tek-tips.com. 3600 MX 0 mail.tecumsehgroup.com.
Additional:
mail.tecumsehgroup.com. 3600 A 216.45.19.20

So, if you send an e-mail to anything@tek-tips.com then your sending server connects to mail.tecumsehgroup.com to send the mail.
