Hi,
I need to move my DNS database from one server to the other but the only documentation i can find says you need to change the ip address on the new box to the ip address of the old box. can you move the databse to a new server witha different ip address??

Many thanks
Matt

You running Active Directory? If not, you might want to use it. Run DCPROMO on both machines, have them replicate then run DCPROMO again to demote them. This way, the database will have been moved and you can take the old one off-line. Good luck.

Matt,

Yes you can. First make sure you move the DB entity itself and it's running as it should in the new server. Then change to the new IP of the new DB server just installed, in all the name servers that are going to connect to it. I did this myself with my ORACLE DB and Nortel NetID product. I required the help of my ORACLE team, but once the DB was running and the pointer into my Name Server running NetID was changed to the new DB IP, everything run smooth.
Recommend that you first test the new setup in a Q&A DB server and Q&A Name Server before going production.
Hope this helps.

so youre saying its as simple as:-

- stop dns on both servers
- copy the database over
- start dns on the new server
- reconfigure clients

and bobs ur uncle?

bobs or uncle? I'm not sure I'm familiar with the jargon sorry.

Yes exactly what you say:
- Stop dns daemon in your Name Servers
- Copy the DB to the new box
- In the machines pointing to the DB, change to the new IP of the DB
- Restart the DNS DB
- Restart the DNS daemon processes in your Name Servers

You don't need to reconfigure clients. I am assuming that you are not changing any of your Name Server's IP, so you shouldn't change anything in the clients.

Here's a star Hose. I still would look at using dcpromo myself. That way you have a backup. Good luck.
