My system log is filling up with DNS errors. It happens everyday here are the errors

Registration of the DNS record '_kpasswd._udp.XXX.COM. 600 IN SRV 0 100 464 jrserv.XXX.COM.' failed with the following error:
DNS operation refused.

all of ther errors are simalar.

XXX=domain name

By default in Win2000 DNS zones are not set to allow dynamic updates. Change your zone to allow dynamic updates and these records should be entered fine.

I let AD setup my DNS for me. where do I have to go to change the updates

Navigate to Administrative Tools from your Start,program files.
Open DNS.
In the DNS mmc, navigate to forward lookup Zones. You will find your domain name listed there. Right-click it and select properties. You will see an option to allow Dynamic updates there.

that is just it Because I let AD setup my DNS I do not have that console. There is no DNS in my admin options

Click Start -> Run
type mmc
Click the Console menu option at the top, select Add/remove snap in
Click the add button
You should see a whole bunch of admin tools you can add. select the dns one close all windows for the add/remove snap-in. Now save the mmc onto your desktop or something - name it DNs. Perhaps you want to have a whole bunch of stuff in there like dns,dhcp,computer management etc - up to you.

thats what has been buggin me. it is not there either. I did a search for DNS and came up empty

Try looking in control panel/admin tools. You cannot have ad working without dns. Could you give us more details about the error messages?

I know dns is installed, because I let AD do it when I set it up. I can go to "Configure server" and setup dns from scratch. But I usually have problems doing so. That is whay I let AD set it up.

I have a very simple setup. 1 server with win2k server sp4 w/exchange. I have 3 domain names and hosting 3 web sites. I am using the domain DNS service from 4domains.com.

How long has this been going on? Do you remember anything changing like installing sp4? Good luck.

nope, my old server got fried. so I started from scratch. I am only running AD for exchange only. My clients do not log onto the doman locally.

so I can setup DNS from the "configure server menu". what needs to be configured. I do not get the whole foward and reverse lookup zone thing.

When you setup DNS, did you run dcpromo??

Curious...

Brandon

no, I did not run dcpropmo. I let AD setup DNS

Did you install a DNS server?? (cntrl pnl, add/remove sw, windows components, etc...

no, I did not run dcpropmo. I let AD setup DNS
Missing something here. Dcpromo is how you promote a server to install AD and make it a domain control compared to a stand alone server, so how did AD install dns if you didn't run dcpromo? Without dcpromo, you have a stand alone server. Please clarify. Thanks, and good luck.

after installing windows 2000 server, updating all service packs and fixs. I ran configure your server. In there I selected AD. While AD was installing it ask me if I wantted to set up DNS or let the system do it for me. I let it do it for me.

I don't know. It not causing any problems. my 3 web sites and exchange and ftp and terminal server are all working with no issues. I just hate seen the system log full message
