Can someone tell me how to resolve the following entry in the Event Viewer log for my DNS server?

"The DNS server was unable to complete directory service enumeration of zone mynetwork.local. This DNS server is configured to use information obtained from Active Directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly and repeat enumeration of the zone. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is "". The event data contains the error."

I see this quite often, and really don't understand what it means or what I should do.

Thanks in advance,

J

Execute dcdiag and netdiag on the DC and report back any issues.

Did you follow the instructions in the link i posted yesterday to configure your DNS correctly?

The links below will tell you how to use NetDiag and DCDiag.

When you are the IT director, it's your job to make sure the IT works. If it does work they know already and if it doesn't, they don't want to hear your pathetic excuses.

I think that I set everything up correctly like you mentioned yesterday as everything seems to be working. I just noticed this error, but didn't know if I should attempt to correct it.

Anyway, here are the results from DCDiag.exe and NetDiag.exe.

I didn't list everything that passed, but only the things that I thought stood out. I can post the entire results if it would help.

Thanks.

Code:
DCDiag.exe
Starting test: systemlog
An Error Event occured. EventID: 0x00000457
Time...
(Event String could not be retrieved)
srv-saturn failed test systemlog

NetDiag.exe
Warning the net card '1394 Net Adapter' may not be working because it has not received any packets.
Warning At least on of the (00) 'WorkStation Service' (03) 'Messenger Service' (20) 'WINS' names is missing
Not remote names have been found.

WINS service test...:Skipped
There are no WINS servers configured for this interface

Warning You don't have a singel interface with the (00)'WorkStation Service' (03) 'Messenger Service' (20) 'WINS' names defined

Go into your network connections and disable the 1394 adapter i am sure you are not using it anyway. Go into your services and restart the workstation and messenger services. Not sure if you are running wins or if you need to or not. most people dont need or run wins, uninstall it if this is the case. re-run dcdiag and netdiag and report any issues.

Do you have more than one network card? If so you need to look at disabling one for now.

first question i should have asked was: in your tcpip properties on the dns server, is your primary dns server itself?

Hi RoadKi11 i'll just refer you to this thread where we went through DNS setup yesterday, so jshurst's DNS should be configured correctly. There is also more info about the problem there.

TCP/IP properties, the only dns server listed is itself (in this case 192.168.1.100 (should it be 127.0.0.1 instead?).

I disabled the 1394 connection. WINS server role is not installed.

Restarted the WorkStation service.

The Messenger Service was Disabled, so I set it to Automatic and Started it.

Rebooted the server.

Ran dcdiag and netdiag. The only error I'm getting is with the system log.
Code:
Starting test: systemlog
An Error Event occured. EventID: 0x00000457
Time...
(Event String could not be retrieved)
srv-saturn failed test systemlog

Also, the error was previously getting logged in the event log only when I rebooted the server, but this time I don't see an error, so I guess it might be corrected.

Should I do anything about the system log error?

Thanks for the help,

J

I would clean out the all the event logs, back them up first if you really need the history. might have a minor curruption in one of the logs. see if that clears the error when you run dcdiag.

RoadKi11

Thanks for bringing me up to speed porkchop

Cleaned out the logs and ran dcdiag again (great tool by the way ;-) ) and it is still there. I'm thinking that it might be a problem with the system time. It hasn't caused any problems so I'm just going to leave it for now.

Thanks for the help,

J
