How do I put a new entry in my DNS for a host in a foreign domain located on my WAN? I have tried creating a new forward lookup zone of foreigndomain.com, but entering the host in that domain still does not allow me to ping it by name. All combinations I have tried still don't allow my network to recognise the foreign host. Is lmhosts the only answer?
Any help appreciated
Gerg

Creating a forward lookup zone for the domain should do it. Make sure your PCs are set to use your server, and only your server, as their dns server. Also, make sure your server is pointed to itself for DNS.

If I create a forward lookup zone (eg foreigndomain.com), what entries do I explicitly put in the zone? Putting in a host entry does not work, and if I add in a new domain, there is no facility for an IP address.

Greg, create a new forward lookup zone called foreigndomain.com. Within the zone, create a Host record, and leave the host field blank (same as parent), then put in whatever IP addrss you want. That is all you will have to do. If you want to add more hosts, ex. you would add a host record, and just put the host name, and put whatever you like for the IP address.
