One of my coworkers noted a strange anomaly with our DNS and / or DHCP yesterday, where it seems that old records are not going away. If you perform an NSLOOKUP again and again on the same DHCP issued IP, you get more than one machine name assigned to the IP.

This morning I was looking up some IP's that are showing up as high streaming users in my packet shaper box. See below. Any thoughts as to why? I am not real familiar with how the aging or automatice deleation works with DNS in Microsoft Server 2003. Any suggestions, help, or additional questions are appreciated.

In DHCP configuration on your server:

1. Right-Click on the scope, and select Properties.
2. On the DNS tab, make sure all three check boxes are checked. Also, select the "Always update DNS" radio button.

Then, in your DNS configuration:

1. Right-Click the zone (or the DNS server itself, if you want to configure all zones) and select properties.
2. Make sure dynamic updates is set to "Yes".
3. Click on AGING.
4. Make sure "Scavenge stale resource records" is checked.
The default 7 days for both scavenging and refresh should be sufficient.
