Hi,

I have SBS 2003 SP1 - DNS is setup amd configured correctly with Forwarders pointing to my ISP.

However, some web sites do not work???? and some email gets bounced back because DNS cannot resolve the domain name.

I know the ISPs DNS servers are working it just seems there is a bug in SBS 2003 DNS that causes it not to work properly.

Help?

Having used SBS and Windows 2003 for years I can tell you there is no bug in the DNS system that would prevent name resolution. Most likely the problem is a routing issue. You can use TRACERT to determine where a query may be failing. Also take a look at DNSSTUFF.COM to verify an IP address.

Just for giggles though, verify that your DNS is configured as such:

DNS Settings:

Configure the server NIC to only list itself or other DCs, no ISP DNS gets configured on the NIC TCP/IP properties.

In DHCP, set the DNS scope option to only provide the IP of your local DNS server

For any statically configured IPs, make sure the DNS only lists local DNS servers and not ISP DNS.

In the DNS snap-in on the forwarders tab enter your ISP DNS.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

I find it really amusing when people say DNS is correctly configured. If it were correctly configured, you wouldn't be having problems. Post your DNS configuration and we'll let you know if it's correctly configured. Provide the IPCONFIG /ALL on a workstation with a problem and on the server.
