DLT Backup problem

We have only had this server for 5 months and in this time we have been unable to complete a full back up of any work because of the speed at which the tape drive backs up.
The tape is a HP DLT VS80 and is connected to the mother board SCSI. The raid array is working fine but we are only getting 6.33MB per Min on the back up speed.
We use archserve for backing up our information.
A simple 4gb back up is taking most of an afternoon and a full back up is taking over 3 days to complete.
Is there anyone who can tell me why this is? I have moved the Tape from SCSI 2 to 1 to see if that does anything but its still the same. I have no idea why this is happening but its very frustrating. Any Advice would be apreciated.

I have thought about adding an additional raid / Scsi card however Im unsure that if i add it,it will destroy my raid array.
My old server is sitting unused at the moment and i was thinking about taking the raid card from that.

thanks for the tip. As i was running windows 2000 i made the following changes...

Title: Throughput and block sizes for DLT drives

ARCserve for Windows NT version 6.x defaults to a write-blocksize of 16k for DLT drives. The reason for this low default valueis that Mylex RAID controllers only supports block sizes up to62K. In order to increase performance on a non-Mylex card, makethe following changes in the Windows NT registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
BRIGHTSTORE ARCSERVE
TAPEENGINE
Device#
(Device # corresponds to the tape drive that will require a changein block size)
Click EDIT, then ADD VALUE
ValueName=DefaultBlockFactor
Data type = Reg_Dword
Data: 7, Hexadecimal

In addition to 7, which is the largest possible settingfor block size, the following values can also be chosen:

0 = 512 (default)
1 = 1,024 (1K)
2 = 2,048 (2K)
3 = 4,096 (4K)
4 = 8,192 (8K)
5 = 16,384 (16K)
6 = 32,768 (32K)
7 = 65,536 (64K)

This is now giving me over 140mb per Minute. Many thanks for guiding me in the right direction.

I have the same problem, but when I modify the register and lauch the application, it reset the default data block to 1K
What can I do? How can I protect the register?
THNX
Kurg.

I have never heard of the registery changing back to its original state after a change so im a little unsure on how to proceed here. Have you lookd on tek tip for registry problems?

I am having the exact some problem with slow backups using Arcseve9 on a 2003 box with a VS80 backing up around 9MB/min.

I have all of the latest service packs and hotfixes installed. When I add the registry key it is deleted whenever the Arcserve services start.

Any ideas and all help is appreciated...
