Display resolution on startup 1

I have just upgraded Windows ME to XP Pro.
When the PC starts up it starts in the lowest resolution and no matter what I do it will not stay in a higher resolution.
I have changed video cards etc but to no avail.

I can change to any resolution after starting but when I restart it is back to the lowest resolution.

Help!!!!

I have tried everything including different brands of video cards. I have installed software supplied with the cards and also tried updated software from the makers sites.

Once the PC has finished booting the resolution can be set to any resolution but will not stick under any circumstances when the PC is rebooted.

I have done a registry repair, removed antivirus software, and uninstalled the video cards and reinstalled them and still no go. I am not using Norton antivirus software so that rules out a possible problem there.

I won't upgrade a Windows ME PC again that is for sure.

With the amount of trouble you are having it might be worthwhile to cut your losses and do a clean install of XP after reformatting your drive. You will have a lot less problems than going down the upgrade path.

Backup any data you require to be saved.


Use your XP CD (Upgrade version) and perform a clean install.

Read the paragraph,
"How to Partition and Format Your Hard Disk by Using Windows XP Setup."

Early on in the install you will be asked to show XP a qualifying product. It will require a 98 or ME etc. CD to be inserted in your CD drive.

Hopefully you will find not carrying the excess baggage from your old operating system will give you a smoother ride.

After you have installed XP, protect yourself with a firewall and any virus software you have. Go online and update your virus scanner and then go to Windows Updates.

My thoughts were exactly that. I was just hoping there may be a resolution to save me the hassle.

I have put it on the agenda to do a clean install next week if no one comes up with a solution.

XP is a good system but every day I come across little things it does differently.

A problem has also appeared out of nowhere on my own system where my folders and files in Window Explorer go to Icon view even though I have set all to show as Details view. Very frustrating. I have asked Microsoft but no reply yet.

Thanks for the info.

Setting the number of folder to 5000 fixed the problem on my PC. Looks like a clean install on the Video problem.

Obviously my system needs a clean up. all I need now is for someone to advise me on how to get more hours in a day to do it.
