Dear Greater I.T. Intellect,

Via win95/98 clients, when one specifies an appearance scheme (i.e. display properties -> appearance tab -> scheme drop down button), and does a save as...where does windows put the file. I named the file something really unique so I could find it again (i.e. psashyt), but when I do a, start menu -> search -> file or folders -> specify c: drive -> find file *psashyt*.*, windows does not find anything under this nomer. I set folder properties to show all system, hidden, embedded, etc. files...to no avail.

Help me?

mgodinez:

Schemes are not stored on your computer as a file.

The current scheme is listed in Win.ini under the heading [colors]

All other available schemes are stored in the registry as binary values at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Appearance\Schemes.

Been there done that...you da man.

So to copy a customized color scheme from one client to another, would you just cut and paste the color section from and to each respective win.ini file?

I'm assumin' that sound schemes are stored the same way...as a file/search does not work for those either.

Thanks for the help.

mgodinez:

A couple of notes here. When you copy and paste an appearance theme to another computer, make sure that if there is a special font refered to that it is installed on the receiving computer. Win.ini is only processed at start up so any changes won't take effect until you restart.

Sound schemes are a different animal. The registry entries are located at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Appevents\Schemes\Apps\.default*each event listed seperately*\.current
However these are only pointers to the .wav files They are stored in:
C:\Windows\Media The registry entries and the .wav files must match or it will not work properly.
