Display only the first and last record of a group

I need to display only the first and last record of a group and then transfer that information to another report. I am using CR XI. How do I just capture the first and last records' information?
I know how to create subreports. I am just having a hard time getting the first and last records of a group.

Place field in the gorup heade and the group footer and suppress the details.

Or create a suppression formula for the details section such as:

previous({table.groupfield}) = {table.groupfield}
or
next({table.groupfield}) = {table.groupfield}

This means right clicking the detailssection and selecting section expert->X2 next to suppress.
