Disk IO

I am running into difficulties when running any queries on 3 processor SQL 7.0 Server. All other users' access slows to a halt until query is complete. I checked processor utilization - it is less than 10% on each processor. Memory is only utilized to 35%. BUT - disk IO is maxed out. I am currently using Enterprise Manager to run the queries. My question - "How do I tell the query to only utilize "X" amount of disk IO? " What other options are there ? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

What is your disk setup? How much RAM do you have? Do you have applications other than SQL Server running on the box?

Actually the machine has 1GB memory and the memory utilization is only at 30-35%. My real question is "Can you write a query and specify how much disk IO at a max will be used?"

No, not directly (its not a "hint" that can be used, unlike some others). You can indirectly control how much disk I/O is created by tweaking indexes, maximizing log/file group placements, and so forth. Robert Bradley

How do organizations overcome max disk IO in Microsoft SQL? I come from a db2 background - I have never seen this issue before. Thanks again for your help.

On your server's property settings, check the Recovery Interval. If it is 0, increase it to, say, 45.
