I have a server in a remote branch connected to the domain via WAN to servers at HQ. The server in the branch office will not allow files to be written to it. First found this with Accpac, the main application, and then noticed it even happens with a Excel or Word file. It does not happen with a Notepad or Wordpad file.

Do not know much about it but the branch server is using DHCP for loca subnet, DNS and WINS and DCPROMO has been run on it. Nobody seems to know what the problem is.

Any ideas please?

First check your disk space, most functions are copied to the temp folder and that tends to take up a lot of space, you can also clean out the "cookies", if you are low on disk space then the server should have a bigger drive, get the size you need times 2 or 3 then format and ghost the current drive onto it to preserve your environment. Perform regular system maintenance to keep those folders cleaned out. You should be recieving some kind of system error message, check your event logs and see whats happening, post the error you are recieving and that will allow all of us to better determine the problem and solution. Good luck.

It is a new server with 25Gb out of 36Gb as free.

Are you able to open an existing word or excel file? Can you rule out a directory permissions problem?

Hi tom11011,
I found the problem. You will not believe how stupid it is. The Office files not saving is a permissions problem as you suggested, but the Accpac "disk full" problem was the following. I copied the data files from the main server via CD-R. And yes, (you are now saying, "OH No") I forgot to flag the files as read/write on the target server. I probably forgot because it was via a zip file.

Funny though, I could not see this with Explorer. I used Windows Commander, and as soon as I viewed the files I saw the problem. Changed the attribite and now works fine.

Sorry for wasting your time.

Regards
Alex
