I am using windows7, home premier, oem software. My disk drive has suddenly stopped reading disks. Drivers are all up to date. The disk tray opens ok, disk is inserted, lights are flashing as if reading, then lights stop. The disks are able to be read in both my laptop and another desktop running xp ok. Disk drive has previously burnt disks ok. There are no conflicts in device manager. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you.

I have answered my own thread thank you. Just so happened that the cable had worked itself loose within the pc. All connected up again and working fine. Thank you if you have read this thread.

Glad you've identified the problem and sorted it...

If it's an IDE interface, then probably best to replace the cable with a new one as the multiple connections will possibly fail again. If SATA, again, suggest cable replacement, selecting one that's a tighter fit. Otherwise maybe use a plastic cable tie to keep it in place and prevent disconnection.

I suggest looking for a sata cable or IDE cable that has a cable lock on it. The sata cable has a metal clip that has to be pushed in to release, works good. The ide has tabs on each side of the cable that need to be pinched towards each other to unlock, these only work if the connector on the system board has the little holes on the side of the connector.
