Win 98 disk deframenter just doesn't work anymore! I have it scheduled to defrag on a regular basis, and it never gets past 0. Have even tried to do it manually and it still does not get past 0. Have also tried turning off the screen saver, and that does not work...any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try scandisk first. Might clean up some addressing problems that cause defrag to fail. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Scan disk runs ok, and on schedule.

Using the defrag.exe file from Win me speed a lot the defrag procedure without having any conflicts.

What? How do I run defrag.exe from Win me?

Just copy the defrag.exe from a pc running win se via diskette, mail, etc and replace the win98se one from your pc located usually at c:\windows, doesn’t need even to reboot.

I usually have good results when running defrag in safe mode, this ensures nothing else is running in the background which causes defrag to start over. (same goes for scandisk)

you can also try system file checker
sfc in run line
and reinstall the program from win98 cd

X-)

You might also want to check to make sure that the disk defragmenter does not have any missing files that it would need to do its scheduled tasks on your computer. That just might be something to check into. Hopefully this helps a little anyway. Good Luck.

Thanks for all your great suggestions! The system file checker was ok...so now I am going to try the safe mode idea, and if that does not work then I will go to another one of the good thoughts that all of you have shared.
