Disappearing network browse list

My new client is running a Windows 2000 server with AD installed. He has a mixture of Win98, 2000 & XP clients. When doing a network browse the list of computers will sometimes show them all and sometimes be completely empty.

In fact on one Windows 98 machine by opening & closing Network Neighbourhood continually it would appear and then disappear completely at random.

This problem also seems to be tied to the fact that on workstations, particurlarly Win98 you get a "No domain server available or password is incorrect" message when trying to log onto the domain. However if you just keep trying, without restarting etc, it will eventually log in.

Anybody seen this or any ideas would be of great use.

Your problem seems to be related to DNS and WINS.

Do you have a DHCP Server at that location? Do you have a WINS and DNS server? Is the DHCP server giving the correct DNS and WINS server IP? Is the Servers pointing to the correct DNS and WINS servers? Is you DNS server configured to use WINS? Is you DHCP server updating the DNS server?

If you have a server that it is acting as WINS, its TCP/IP WINS configuration has to point to itself for both primary and secondary addresses.

Windows 98 and NT need WINS.

Thanks for this info. I know they have DHCP. DNS is not running but I am not sure about WINS. I will check.
