I am helping lock-down the workstations on a local school's LAN system and we've been having a *LOT* of trouble with students being ableto modify the contents of the hard disks by Right-Clicking on the "Start Button" and opening windows Explorer. Does anyone know how to disable this???

Install Vorpal Shield. Version 3 can lock the desktop against attacks and mistakes. Ah, dang it, another commercial endorsement.
Hope this helps
Thank you VERY MUCH for that tip Wayne....I've gotten congratulated about 14x for getting that info!
Now, do you have another tip for disabling the right-click in the [Start][Programs] tree? (Guess what.....a really rowdy one got through anywise)
heh heh heh....I don't want to lock them down so tightly that I can't screw anything up, now do I? Actually; we're thinking about changing those files to something more like:

Windows is loding properly now....
anyone caught attempting to hamper this will be promptly EXECUTED!!! ;)

Contact me if you think you've got one that I don't :)

Hi being a former student in these classes the one thing with those programs that lock down 95 is that they load themselves from the autoexec.bat file. It was pretty simple in my class to just make a boot disk and modify the autoexec.bat file to bypass these programs. a better way would be to have a program of linked batch files that goes in and deletes all the files on that hard drive at boot up. a program like this could also restore registry settings so any change to desktop, etc.. could be modified back towards their original settings. if you want i can send you the batch files for this i think it is a specific software my school paid but i doon't know the names of the people who made the software. Oh and i alsways had problems with admins who locked down the labs to much :)

hope it helps
Hmmm...interesting idea.....but we've already adressed the boot-disk hack-in that you've mentioned......booting from flopy A: has been DISABLED....and the WinLock is run through the server....a little better; but if you choose "Cancel" on the server login box, then make a Windows Login for yourself...you've just defeated WinLock.....none of the students have found that hole yet though (excepting myself, of course ;)
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller.
