Are you sure that removal tool works for DX 9? It only states support for DX 2 - DX 8 officially.

This is the problem i have.
I have found loads of stuff to remove 9 from winXP/2000 or to remove older versions of directx, but nothing to remove 9 from win98. im even open to a manual removal if thats the case

There's a slightly newer version of the direct x eradicator (1.09) here: which in the readme states that it supports win 95 upwards. I haven't tried it though, so can't vouch for the truth of that statement!
