I have developed an SMTP relay program.
I want to install this on a PC attached to the LAN.
The LAN has Exchange 2000 installed on a Windows 2000 server. The aim is that all emails going out to the Internet pass through my relay.
Incoming mail goes directly to the exchange server, but outgoing goes via the relay.
Can someone please guide me in the steps I have to take to set this up.
What permissions etc have to be set if any.

If the relay is on the same LAN, will the exchange server allow Internet access from my PC.
A pointer to further reading would be helpful in the long run but right now I need quick solutions.

Basically, you want to set up Exchange to use a SMTP smart host.

First, for more background info, Microsoft has a white paper on SMTP that can be found here:

Second, setting up Exchange to use a SMTP relay as a Smart Host is very easy to do. The simplest case would be an organization with one Exchange server, that has no SMTP connectors configured, and is using the default SMTP virtual server. You simply need to navigate to the server in Exchange System Manager, expand the Protocols tree, expand the SMTP tree, right-click on the Default SMTP Virtual Server, and select properties. On the Delivery tab, you will need to click the Advanced button. You will then see a box for entering a smart host. You can enter either a FQDN or IP address. If you enter an IP address, you should enclose it in [brackets], which will tell Exchange not to perform a DNS lookup on it.

If your situation differs significantly from this, let us know, and we can tailor our advice.
