Hello,

I have digital out onboard sound on the my new motherboard, I would like to be able to have a single cable that goes to digital in on my amplifier, I pressume that this is possible, does any one know what cable I need and where I can get one from?

What does the socket look like on the motherboard and Amp?
if it's S/PDIf (Sony/Philips Digital Interface...ooo get me! lol) on both should be easy, just need a cable, but you may have incompatible types.

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

It is a single "hole" (yes I know, not the most descriptive answer to a question), I have a gigabyte motherboard (fairly new) with the onboard digital out coming out of the back plate. yamaha amplifier, the input on the amplifier is what I beleive to be standard digital in (the digital cable that I bought for my CD player is in their at the moment - which is just a standard digital cable for audio use) so the amplifier end would need to be the same as that, Is their more than one type of cable for digital out on the motherboard?

Thanks

Is the socket in question marked "Audio Out" or "SPID out"? Straight audio would look like an earphone plug hole. "SPID" looks like a miniature keyboard hole. What socket do you have for "input" on your amplifier?

The digital output from the motherboard will probably be either optical, in which case it'll be a small black square-ish hole, or electrical, in which case it'll be a single phono socket (I think they call them 'cinch' in the US) that looks like a raised lump with metal on the outside and a hole in the middle.

The digital input on your amplifier will also be one of those two types, or hopefully both. My Yamaha amp has one electrical digital input and three optical ones.

To link electrical to electrical you just need a normal phono cable. You can buy ones that say they're specially for digital connections but a decent-quality phono cable will do just as well.

To link optical to optical you need an optical cable; they're very thin with plastic connectors on the end.

If your amp only has a single input and it's different to the output on your motherboard, all is not lost. You can get devices that convert optical signals to electrical ones and vice versa - check out or
