Suppose you had a sales operation. This might sell into regions, North, South, East & West. Region is a dimension. You could also assess your sales by Customer, work out a Top-10 by revenue or gross margin. Customer is a dimension, revenue & margin are measures. Customers have addresses, addresses are details.

Dimensions are the elements by which you slice or disect data, the different view points. Details are facts about dimensions, e.g. colours of cars

Measures are the means by which you assess the performance of an activity. Sales revenue, Profit, bookings made, leads aquired, new employees rescruited, in short they are the numbers a business is run by.

In Business Objects measures are aggregated by some means, often by the "Sum" function. Dimensions are the breaks, or groups you would analyse the data by, and details identify a particular dimension more exactly.
