Friends
I would like to know more about Remote Desktop and Terminal Servers.

I am already setup for VPN in my office. Here in office I set my Xp Pro PC to accept remote connections.
At home I used vpn and RDC and tried connecting to my office xp machine and I was successful.

For the above there is no need of terminal server. It is all a remote desktop connection process. Am I right?

Also I have a dedicated terminal w2k3 server just setup. I have installed our ERP applications on this server. If I were to setup my sales users, so that they will able to login to this ERP system from different locations ..then the terminal server is useful..my guess.

Basically the terminal server is for remote access of applications and RDC is to connect to desktops. Is my understanding correct.?

or Should I use terminal server still, to connect to my office pc.

Could some one enlighten abt security methods in RDC/Terminal Services.

Terminal server is like a computer, that you connect to, from there you run programs and only see screenshots.. but its like your actually at a local computer..

this helps with limited licences for softwere.. ect..

you all connect to the same server.. "a powerful one"

and you can run multipal programs for multipal users..

Remote desktop just allows a user to access there own desktop, or a RD server, just to grab a file or get something does fast..

they are somewhat similar.. but they do have diffrences..

I'd like to take a stab at providing a better explanation.

Remote Desktop allow you to remote control a PC. The desktop computer can only host a single session, so that computer will be in use and unavailable to others while you are logged in through RDP. With RDP you will have full access to all programs installed on that PC. You can redirect printers, hard disks, sound and even serial ports to the PC you are physically located at. A down side to this is that you will probably need to establish a VPN to be able to reach the Remote Desktop.

Terminal Services works much the same way, except that a Terminal Server is able to host multiple user sessions. The advantage of using TS over Remote Desktop is that you can simplify the connectivity because a TS is often accessible via a public IP (perhaps via NAT) and as such will not require the user to first establish a VPN connection. Another advantage is that the TS offers a central place for all users to go. Everyone can connect the same way, to the same address making training less. A disadvantage to TS is that often you may not have "all" of your programs available to you that you might otherwise have on your desktop computer.Another disadvantage is that you need to purchase licensing for TS and also that you are sharing resources with other TS users. TS hardware needs to be fairly robust because of this.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
