Difference between motherboard chipsets?

Ok here's another question..
Does anybody know if the Intel chipsets on motherboards perform a lot better then others like Sis chipsets? And if so where is a good place to get good info on which chipsets to use or if so one has a suggestion. Right now I have a p-4 1.8 with a Asus board and a Sis chipset (running xp) I needed to buy another system and I was going to spend the extra $$ for the Intel chipsets is it worth it?

New Canterwood Intel chipset is currently the only chipset that supports the 800fsb P4. When used with a current 533fsb processor the performance is nothing special.
As with the Granite bay this chipset is aimed at the work station market and not particularly the Desktop arena, a cheaper variant (the name of which eludes me ATM) will follow hot on it's heals and will be more suited for everyday desktop use.
SIS 655 offers the best price/performance, at this time.
There is no striking differance that I know of, in reliability
or compatibility, the only major differance being the very high price of the new Granite Bay and Canterwood chipsets and thus proportionally higher prices for the motherboards.
All new motherboard chipsets appear to be extremely fussy about the memory type used so be sure you check the manufactures compatibility lists.

I prefer just about anything to SiS or PC Chips.
Intel, Via, and Nforce II are all really good.
Intel for stability, NForceII for overclocking/speed, and Via somewhere in the middle.

I have been very unhappy with my son's SiS 650 & 900 chipset PC. It is very hard to find any updated drivers, the onboard LAN has been very unreliable under any heavy UDP traffic, the video is mediocre, and even though HP has replaced the motherboard twice under Warranty the current best advice they can give me is to use add-in boards and disable the onboard devices.

Gee, isn't that nice. Buy our fancy HP computer with everything included, OH, but, if you want it to actually work, go buy a NIC, Video card, sound card, modem, ad infinitum...

Kinda think you are talking about past budget SIS chipsets, and the reputation they used to have for cheap and cheerful performance at best but always playing second fiddle to the big boys.
Those days have well and truely gone!
Some of there newer releases have really put the cat amongst the pidgeons, SIS arn't taking any prisoners, believe me they don't play second best to anyone.
Having just built two systems, one with Intels Granite Bay and a 3.06 P4, the other with the SIS 655 and a P4 2.8, both Gigabyte motherboards (new dual power) the SIS setup benchmarked higher across the board and was a hell of a lot easier to setup, it ran faultlessly more than can be said for the Granite Bay.
So there you have it for what it's worth, newer SIS chipset equipt motherboards are definately making waves.
