A friend has a dial-up ISP account on his XP machine. Each time he starts up Outlook Express the dial up box pops up. Ok so far. He has the 'save password' box checked so that he shouldnt have to type his password in each time.

However, the password box always contains more characters than are in his password. If he tries to connect directly the connection fails. He has to re-type his password every time despite the 'save password' being checked.

I have looked at the security settings for the dial-up and it has 'allow unsecured password' selected. What else would be causing this problem?

uncheck the save box , erase the info, hit apply and ok so that it closes it. Open it back up enter new password, check the save box hit apply and ok or just ok for i dont remember actually now if apply is on there. That should fix it. I think sometime while it was open he accidently typed something else in there when he didnt want to. This might not help but thought id give it a shot.

What electronicsfreak says is correct. However, you must sucessfully log on before the new password is saved. If you are not sucessful, the old password will be re-inserted.

install a proggie called "revelation" , then you can see what's behind the ******.

Well, I've tried and tried but nothing seems to get rid of this problem. I appreciate your help, guys, but nothing I do shifts the problem.

I have tried going into the account settings, saving passwords, switching 'save password' on and off in all combinations and still the password stubbornly refuses to be saved as the proper one.

Any other ideas before all my hair is gone??

Heres an idea, completely delete that dial up connection, and create a new one with the correct password.

Good call! I will try it out and report back. Thanks.

Concerning the length of asterisks. This is designed to protect user accounts from attack by preventing a potential hacker from knowing the length of the previous user's password.

Passwords not being saved are all tied up with these articles, irrespective of the program used.
