I have a problem when dialing up my ISP (NTL World if anyone knows it).

When the machine first boots the first time I connect to the Internet it connects. No problem.

If I disconnect and reconnect it gets to the "Verifying username and password" dialog boxs and just refuses to connect. The only difference I've noticed is the first time I connect the dialog box briefly displays something about "opening port" or a similar message about ports which does not appear when I can't connec.

This is using COM1 and a 3Com USR 56k Professional Message Modem.

I used the same service under Windows 98 and have never had a problem like this. Any ideas?

This is Tpex and I work for an ISP. I realize that your post has been here for a while. You may have already found a solution. But, just in case, here's what I think based on what you've stated.

You said that things worked perfectly under Win. 98 with the same service. That suggests you upgraded. Win. ME, perhaps? Keep in mind that the memory requiremnts are different between Win 98 and ME. This could make a difference if the amount of your RAM is low.

I think what is happening is that your modem isn't hanging up immediatly after you disconnect. The "opening port" message means that the modem has a free avenue to communicate and it is about to use it. If the modem is still on the line and you try to connect, you won't be able to connect because all the computer knows is that the port is closed with the very device that the computer is trying to open the port for.

Pick up the phone when you computer won't dial and see if you hear a dial tone on your phone. Make sure the connection is severed before dialing out with the modem again.

Another possibiliy is that your modem needs a new driver. Drivers are the software programs that make devices work correctly with your computer. Drivers don't generally need updating, but modems are different. Communication standards change all the time with International Standards and also with Internet Service Providers. Modem manufacturers generally make their driver updates available for free on their web-site. Unfortunatly, most modem makers go through a lot of changes. Finding a driver may be a challenge. Your ISP's technical support may be able to help you find a driver. Also, the manufaturer or your modem or computer may be of assistance.

The driver is usualy a last resort. You may find that you have the most current driver for the modem already.

Hope that helps.
