Please advise what a Dial Up Adapter does? I am adding DSL to my home computer and want to know what the Dial Up Adapter does.

Hello, this is Tpex and I do tech support for an ISP. With DSL, you won't use the dial up adapter, but it won't hurt to keep it in the Network icon of your control panel, ESPECIALLY if you have Windows ME.

A dial up adapter is a component on your computer that allows you to use a modem or ISDN to connect to the internet. Both are internet services which need a phone line to connect. You can't connect without the dial up adapter installed if you dial up with either service.

In Win 9x, you can install it by going to the Network Icon. On the panel that appears, click on "Add" and then "Adapters". Here you select "microsoft" as the manufactuar and "dial-up adapter" as the component to be installed.

In Windows ME....well lets just say, I hope you never find that the dial up adapter is missing.

But in your case, you don't need this. You probably have an adapter specific to your hardware that your computer will use to connect since you have DSL.

Though you don't need it, don't remove it. You may be in a situation where you need to dial up again one day.

Hope that helps.

Tpex
