Dial Backup to DSL Service

Hi,

Here's my question

We use dial backup on AUX port, what is the best way to tell if the dial backup modem attach to the AUX is working. I did a "shut" command on Ethernet E0, which is attach to the DSL modem and the dial backup worked!!! A colleague said disconnecting the connection from the DSL modem to the wall plug would have been better, is there a difference, if so why?
