Hello,

Does anyone know of any way to have a failover DHCP server using Active Directory or some third party software. I currently have a normal Win2kServer DHCP server. I want to have a backup, in case that the server where to go down there would be a second one to take over. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Eddie,

What you want to do is to have two DHCP servers running on your network. On the first DHCP server you want your IP address to start say for example: 10.1.1.100 and end at 10.1.1.200

On the second DHCP server you want your IP address to start say for example: 10.1.1.201 and end at 10.1.1.300

This way if the other DHCP server is down clients can still pick up their IP address on the second one. Hopefully this gives you an idea on what to do on your network.

10.1.1.300? No such IP!

An IP address is 32 bits, 4 octets of 8, thus the range is 0-255

You're right sorry I was just trying to give a range of numbers I did not think about the end, but yeah ed dearinkr is right it ends at 255. Like I said I was just trying to give a range of numbers sorry for the misinformation
