Problem with DHCP on Avaya IP Phones. I have two VLans setup. 10.1.7.0 for Data. 172.30.1.0 for Voice. Using Windows 2003 Server for DHCP server. Data switch is a Extreme Summit 300 24. Have been having this problem when the phones bootup they recieve a IP address from the 10.1.7.0 network. They then recieve the Option 176 with the following string: L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=10. I have the bootp relay protocal enabled on the switch and pointed at the IP address of the DHCP server. After receiving a IP in the data VLan the phone then reboots and sends out a DHCP discover packet. With a packet analyzer on the DHCP server I see a packet broadcasted out tagged in Vlan 10 but then the server sends out a DHCP Offer to the bootp relay address 172.30.1.250 which is the VLan IP of the Voice VLAN. When I put the analyzer on the port of the phone the I don't see any DHCP offer comming from the switch.

We have set this up on a cisco switch but never an extreme. I would imagine it wouldnt be any different as far as configuration. We did have trouble at first getting the configuration string to work. Once we got that right, it workded great. Make sure your switch ports are set up for hybrid to work on both vlans. If they arent, thats why they can not recieve the dhcp, cause the switch will drop anything but its native vlan. The downlfall to this setup is if the 2003 server goes down, your IPO is dead in the water. Why not set them up statically. Then you dont have to rely on other peices of equipment for you phones to work. I see it as just another point of failure in the mix.

static ip's for ip phones avoids all this. i always ask for enough static ip's for the ip phones, then decide if i will use them later. it leaves your options open. i also get one extra static, so i can use it for my laptop directly into the ipo if i so desire. i can then run the vmpro services off my laptop if i want to for a couple hours.
just slide the export/and other wav files from the customers vmpro to my laptop vmpro, change the ip for vmpro in manager. then i can take their vmpro down, and most people do not even know it is down. if they lose vm to em for an hour, most customers do not care, if it means they do not pay after hours rate for an upgrade. then send a group message to all vm boxes asking them to check their vm, via the phone as an upgrade may not have allowed message notification during the upgrade. check for user vm to em frwd setting prior, and change them to copy, then back after upgrade.

The customer really wants to use DHCP for the phones. I think that it is a problem with the Extreme switch passing the DHCP packet between VLANS. Is there anyone out there that has set this up using the Extreme switches.

I found my problem. I had the following commands in my config that were not needed:

config bootprelay dhcp-agent info option
config bootprelay dhcp-agent info check

As soon as i took out the "dhcp-agent info check" option my phones started getting the DHCP offer packets from the server. The phones then started comming up in the Voice Vlan in the correct IP address range.

It did work with the bootprelay dhcp-agent info option in the config but I took it out because the phones came up without it so I figured I didn't need it.
