On an Windows NT server running dhcp, we have 48 win xp workstations connected. Periodically workstations will lose network connection for split second. Messages in event viewer are

The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{569929F1-2E99-4E6F-9DA3-7F25AD91AF65} was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 000874B4D39E. The following error occurred:
The operation was canceled by the user. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server

The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{569929F1-2E99-4E6F-9DA3-7F25AD91AF65}.

this all takes place in a matter of seconds. If you're in word your document become corrupt.

nothing in event logs on server, just work stations. Doesn't happen on all workstations, either. Could it be Cisco switch? Any ideas?

thanks.

Are all workstations having the problem on the same hub/switch?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Overview: DHCP lease renewals will occur beginning when the lease is 40% used. You need to reduce the renewals, or improve what appears to be spotty communications to the DHCP server itself.

1. You need to have the Speed and Duplex settings perfectly set in this situation. It sounds like an autnegotiation is being forced. See the first section of this faq: faq779-4017

2. Your Cisco switch could be an issue here. How are the individual ports configured? It may be necessary to set fix assignments for both port and adapter, or they may be fixed assignments that are untenable with the workstation connected to that particular port.

3. It would help if the DHCP server could assign fixed IPs based on the MAC of the adapters as reserved addressing.

4. Or, extend the lease interval on the DHCP server.
