DHCP scope scavenging

The DHCP scope on a W2K SBS is not scavenging. I have fixed the problem by manually reconciling the scope and then deleting the unused IP addresses. The scope was set to 2 days and I have now increased this to 5. The problem is resolved in the short term but I have 2 questions:

1. I thought the the DHCP service should automatically remove any unused IP addresses and release them for re-use

2. I thought there was a scavenge setting somewhere but I can not find it.

If anyone has any suggestions and tips I would be most grateful.

Having the same problem. Is it just me, or do the settings for DNS in the DHCP scope properties seem to conflict?

It's set to discard the host and pntr record when the lease expires, but the other setting is to only update when requested by the client.

Whatcha bet the cached addresses in DNS are being reserved by DHCP. Foggy recollection of win client hanging on to the last 10 or so ip addresses assigned by dhcp, so if that's the case, would the client request the record deletion? Hope I'm not chasing a rabbit.

Going to see if I can't replicate in a test rack. Think I'm going to start looking at win DNS cache behaviour server side.
