In a small network of two computers connected via a DSL router/switch one of the computers is not getting a dynamic IP address. The DSL router is a DHCP server and works fine on one PC. On the other, ever since it blue screened (windows 2000), the computer is using a 169 APIPA assigned IP addres rather than a dynamically assigned IP address in the appropriate range.

Does anyone know how to get it to use DHCP correctly ? It's set for "Obtain IP address automatically" in the TCP/IP properies. The network card is working since if I set the IP address manually I can ping over the Internet and see the other computer. Unfortunately if I set the IP address manually I can not see web pages either.

I'm stumped. Any ideas ? Help.

Hi There,

Tfirst thing to check will be the DHCP services:

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services

In the services window, is "DHCP Client" started and set to start up automatically?

It may be that when your machine crashed/blue screened it was because of the DHCP service, and as a precaution Windows may have disabled the service.

Also, is there anything is the system event logs? (Start>Run>eventvwr.exe)

I hope this may point you in the right direction.

Thanks,
Mike Firth

Mike's on the money. If you have problems starting dhcp, (If it's stopped,) you may want to un-install it and re-install it. Also, have you re-booted the server since it came back up? Good luck. (Star for Mike.)
