Our organization recently upgraded 140 machines to windows xp professional from 98. The machines are HP deskpro evo d530s and half of them are still showing up in the DHCP server as "HP123456789" (example pc name, not exact)even after the pc name has been changed. Any ideas as to what is going wrong here?

Have you tried to delete the dhcp lease for those machines? Then try to reboot them and see what you have. I had the same problem. My dhcp server would not release the lease.
