Hi Guys,

We have a Windows NT Server 4.0 running DHCP Manager. This Server is also our PDC. Our Scope has 0 IP addresses remaining to assign. Right now our scope is from (Start Address) xxx.xxx.x.1 to (End Address)xxx.xxx.x.110. I would like to expand the End address from .110 to .150. We have a private network of IPs, so no problem there. Is this as simple as changing the 110 to 150?
Some people say I will need to reboot after making this change, while others say rebooting may not be required. Any ideas? Also, will I have to have all machines turned off to do this or can they remain on? Any other issues/precautions? Please advise. Thank You.

yup yup, just change the end number and restart the service.

you'll have to delete the scope and re enter it, that may cause stress, you can simply just add another scope into the pool

you'll have two scopes
xxx.xxx.xxx.1 to xxx.xxx.xxx.109
xxx.xxx.xxx.110 to xxx.xxx.xxx.150

Thanks guys. However, there is a difference of opinion. According to david, I cannot just change 110 to 150, but need to add a second scope.

Anyone else with prior experience in doing this?

NT4.0 I would suggest doing this late evening if you are not that experienced this will buy you sometime if needed.
If you know all of you settings move forward otherwise jot your current ones down.
You will not have to add a second scope unless you just want too, unless you have multiple subnets, then you will need a second scope. I have ran both without a problem. If you have a private network why not give it the max 1-255, then reserve your servers and printers so they cannot be used. You can stop and start the services, this should work, I have seen the server hang and that required a reboot but, only in a peak period did this happen.

NOTE:If you receive an error about jet database corrupt or something, then you will need to delete the scope and start over. This takes a matter of minutes to rebuild.

What you said in the NOTE kind of scared me. Is this error common? Also, if this error occurs, can I just hit cancel or something, and leave everything the way it was previously, or will I have no choice but to delete the scope and start over?

Don't worry. Like captnstiles says even if the scope did get ruined and you had to add a new one it's a really quick and easy job (providing you have your settings).

I've never had any errors editing a scope - or multiple scopes, but then again I don't need to edit one every day :)
