I have two xp clients on an Active Directory domain. They keep losing their IP configuration and need to renew it. This is despite the fact that DHCP lease lifetime has been set to infinite.

When the PC's lose their lease they get the message unable to connect to server.

Any ideas?

Are these portable machines that change subnets often? Are there other XP machines on your domain that do not have this problem?

No these are desktops that do not change subnets. Other PC's with XP are fine

How often do they lose their leases? Does it happen only when they are first turned on or throughout the course of the day? Are any messages logged (such as duplicate ip address detected)? Are they attached to switches that are running STP?

It tends to happen every couple of days and when they are first turned on. Nothing in the event logs that seems to be relevent although the server is reporting that licence usage for windows users is being exceeded. Could this have a bearing on it?

Not likely. Are they connected to a switch that is running STP?

Stuff like this happens because the machines are not shut down properly .....''

My advice is do not use an infinite lease time, this can cause problems. Set the lease for a set amount of days ....
Normal is 8, then the machines will automatically renew and you will not have to worry about it.......
