Hello

I have RHEL 5.0 running on an IBM box. It does get IP address and other information from the DHCP server except hostname. I ran the dhcp configutation script but it didn't help.

How do I troubleshoot the problem?

Please be advised

Thanks in advance.

Ok, so I guess the question is, what kind of DHCP server are you using, do you have option 12 configured, are you using RFC allowed characters, and also, why would you want to hand out a hostname via DHCP? I've never understood why anybody would do this.

Not sure about option 12 but when I installed the OS first time and asked to anable DHCP for the interface, it got the hostname from the DHCP server. For some reason this doesn't work anymore when I tried re-installation. It has a new IP but no hostname.

I just reinstalled the RHEL and it did get hostname from the DHCP. Not sure why it didn't work earlier.

Do you know any steps to troubleshoot DHCP issues ?

I'm not sure what kind of DHCP server you're running, but first step would be to check physical and logical connectivity - you could just ping the server to test that from another machine that is working. If that's good (you get replies), check the server and make sure the DHCP server service/daemon is running (Windows - services applet, Linux - "ps -ef |grep dhcpd" at the prompt). If it's running, try renewing a lease on a non-critical machine to see if you get a new lease (windows: "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew", Linux: /etc/init.d/network restart). All the obvious stuff like checking your logs on the server, etc. Sounds to me like you may have had an intermittent problem, or something flaky with the installation. Hard to be sure since it seems to have been a one-time thing.
