we have set up a DFS share so that 2 offices in 2 different locations can share project work (ie HQ with a regional site)

The properties (DFS tab) of their drive normally shows a list of servers that services the DFS share and the one that is active is their local DC/server

however at times when users complain their pc is slow the properties of their network drive containing the DFS share shows a remote server as being active consequently this slows the pc down a lot. setting their local server as the active one and rebooting cures the problem. This problem has been recurring etc etc

can anyone give me any pointers as to why this is happening, it seems to always be the regional site which is having the problem and always pointing to the "1st" dns server that came online (ie at HQ)

Did you organize your network structure into Sites? Doing this will allow your clients to access a DFS share on the server in the same site, which should be your local Server. This should speed things up.

Without sites, it will randomly choose a server out of the two that you have.

yes offices are organised into sites

From what I have read, this is usually a workstation problem. If you have XP, SP1 should be installed. This includes an updated MUP.SYS.

I am experiencing the same problems, SP1 did not fix the problem, but it may work for you.

Regards

they are XP with SP1 and apparently this is a known issue with XP

fingers crossed on a patch or sp2 fix
