why is it my "replication policy" is greyed out?

Is the server a member server or a domain controller? That makes a diference. Member servers will not replicate the DFS structure. Also keep in mind you are not actually replicating the files and folders, just the links in DFS to find them.

I know its either a member server or stand alone server that won't replicate. My bet is you are one of those.

You can use DFS to replicate files to remote servers, I do it all the time. We replicate hundreds of megabytes to four remote sites at night, so each site has a "copy" of the file on their local server.

Guys, there are two kinds of DFS roots:
- stand alone
- domain based
Stand alone root is the only one possible when you are creating the DFS root on a server that is not a DC.
Stand alone does not support replciation of the root. Gia Betiu

Our DFS is in a domain on a DC. Just by the name I'd presume a stand alone DFS would not replicate...after all, what would it replicate to since it was a stand alone? ;-)

Thanks for all of you who answered my question...

Ok, let me explain the details.

I recently setup a W2K server with AD and serves as a DNS server at the same time.

Then I created another server that will serve as a secondary or backup server from the first one...

So far no problems...

then I come accross DFS... sounds good to be true.

Objective... To make the two servers identical, if anything happens to the first, the second will pick up it up.

In terms of AD... I don't have any problems. Anything I do on the first will reflect on the second.

Now, is this the same in DFS? How does it works... I know the basics, I already read threads and white papers... but they are not user friendly.

lander215. I like the idea of replicating hundreds of megabytes... How did you do this... thanks
