device suggestions?

Can someone recommend a device for me? This is what I need to route:

one serial connecting to a TSU
one ethernet connecting to a L3 switch
one possible ethernet connecting to firewall for internet
ethernet for LAN

I have a 3620 already attached to the TSU. Let me know if the cost is comparable to a L3 switch.

Hi.

Other than your physical connectivity requirements, you don't really mention what functionality the router needs to provide (e.g. VPN, IOS firewall etc) which makes it a bit tricky to predict which model to specify.

Nearly all Cisco router models come with 1 or 2 integrated fast Ethernet ports. Therefore to get the 3 you've outlined, you will either need a modular router and purchase an Ethernet expanstion module or compromise on this whereby you use 2 ports and deploy switches with VLAN's to get the network seperation you're looking for.

If we assume the latter, I'd likely say go with an 1841 (minimum spec) or you can go up to a 3725 for increased performance.

Which one you settle for may depend on your requirements that aren't listed in your post. If you have no specific requirements in addition to what you've mentioned, then perhaps the 1841 could be the way forward.

Thanks for the response. It looks like the 1841 will work. In answer to your question, no I don't need any of those services on the router. Basically, I have an office with layer2 switches connected by fiber to a layer3 3550. The 3550 is the default gateway. This office was using one subnet, but now I want to add a second subnet accessible beyond the 3550.
